Guaiacum Wood (Cut) - Guaiacum officinale

H-119

Small ornamental tree or shrub from Central America. The hard wood, denser than water, is used for mallets and bowling balls, and yields a resin that is used in medicine, stain, and a chemical indicator. It smells moderately balsamic; and though of little taste, it leaves a burning sensation in the throat. It softens under a moderate heat, and is then quite fragrant.

Known also as Lignum vitae Merlins staff was said to have been made from it.
