The Passionflower was given it's name by Missionaries who believed this plant embodied the mysteries of The Passion, (the Suffering of Christ). The twisted shape of the corona was thought to represent the Thorn of Crowns, the stigma represented the nails use at crucifixion, the sepals accounted for the apostles and the tendrils thought to represent the ropes that bound Christ. The most general use of the passionflower is to symbolise belief and faith.
