The name Scullcap is derived from the latin scutella, meaning little dish. This refers to the shape of the of the calyx on the flower. It was once known as Madweed or Mad-dog Scullcap because it was thought to be a cure for rabies!
Ruled by the element of Water, this herb has a gentle loving energy than can bring peace and harmony. One of the most effective and well known nervines, when taken internally it acts as a mild sedative. In magickal applications you can sprinkle either the dried herb or a tea made of the same it around your home to keep a tranquil aura. Scullcap is also believed to be an aid to meditation, probably because of its actions as a relaxant, it helps to calm restless energy. Scullcap helps us by quieting the outer stimulus, allowing us to receive and hear inspiration, dreams and visions.
As a herb of Water Scullcap is often used in love spells and charms. As it is also ruled by Saturn it's main application is as a bonding herb for couples. Saturn has a binding energy, and is often a herb used in hand fastening ceremonies, either burnt as an incense or a sprinkle placed in the ritual cup.
